Andy Murray got his 2014 US Open campaign underway with a dramatic 6-3, 7-6(6), 1-6, 7-5 victory over Holland's Robin Haase at Flushing Meadows on Monday.
Murray, who is looking to reclaim the title he won in 2012, started well taking a two set lead before being hit by cramp after an hour and 45 minutes. Haase took advantage and won the third set comfortably 6-1 and looked on course to take the match to a fifth set when serving at 5-3. Somehow Murray broke twice in a row and then served out to take the fourth set and the match. Murray faces Matthias Bachinger in the second round.
Speaking after the match, Murray said: "I was in a good position, and then my body failed me...I don't really know how I got through...I don't know exactly what happened, but I will try to get to the bottom of it before I play again."
