Reid loses wheelchair tennis doubles semi at Wimbledon

Gordon Reid and Dutchman Maikel Scheffers lost to top seeds Shingo Kunieda and Stephane Houdet to end hopes of three British finalists on Sunday at Wimbledon.

Japan's Kunieda and Frenchman Houdet dominated the first set taking a 4-0 lead before Reid and Scheffers got a game on the board at 4-1.

The British-Dutch pairing, who have won four of the five tournaments they've played together so far, kept themselves in the first set getting back to 3-5 but couldn't hold on in the ninth game and lost it 6-3.

They broke early in the second to take a 2-1 lead but Kunieda and Houdet reeled off three straight games to make it 4-2 and from there they went on to wrap up the match 6-3, 6-3.

Following semi-final wins for Andy Murray and wheelchair tennis player Jordanne Whiley yesterday, Reid was hoping to add to the British finalists in action at SW19 tomorrow.

"It was tough out there against Stephane and Shingo as they are the top two players in the world right now and showed exactly why," said Reid, who is currently at career high rankings of No.4 in singles and No.5 in doubles.

"It's always an honour to play at Wimbledon and we did play some good tennis out there today but it just wasn't to be."

"Hopefully the crowds will support us again as they did today and after my match I can cheer for Andy to get his first Wimbledon title!"

Kunieda and Houdet will face second seeds Ronald Vink and Frederic Cattaneo after they came through a long encounter against last year's champions Tom Egberink and Michael Jeremiasz 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Reid will be back in action on the grass courts as he faces Egberink and Jeremiasz for third place tomorrow while Whiley will play her doubles final with Japanese partner Yui Kamiji at midday on Court 12.
