Whiley finishes runner-up at Wimbledon

Jordanne Whiley and Yui Kamiji had to settle for runners-up honours at Wimbledon today after they were defeated by reigning champions Aniek van Koot and Jiske Griffioen.

The No.1 seeds came out on top 6-4, 7-6(6) in a match where all four players struggled to hold serve in the hot conditions on Court 12.

Whiley and Kamiji had led the second set tie-break 4-0 and had three set points at 6-3 but the reigning Australian Open and Roland Garros champions dug deep and won five straight points to take the title.

“I’m really disappointed we didn’t take our chances in that second set as we were playing really well and pushing Aniek and Jiske all the way,” said Whiley, who was competing in her second consecutive Wimbledon final.

“Overall I’m really pleased that I got to the final again but I’m already looking ahead to next year and thinking about taking that extra step to win the title.”

“The crowd was amazing and it’s great to be playing on home soil so soon with the British Open coming up in Nottingham later this month.”

Elsewhere on Court 14, there was better news for Lucy Shuker and she claimed third spot with Dutchwoman Marjolein Buis as the second seeds defeated Sharon Walraven and Sabine Ellerbrock.

“It’s a nice way to finish off the tournament with a win and we hit our shots well today against tough opponents,” said Shuker, who is currently ranked world No.3 in doubles and No.7 in singles.

“It’s pretty amazing to play at Wimbledon and to be part of this fantastic Grand Slam so I’ll keep working hard to make sure I can come back.”

It wasn’t Gordon Reid’s day as he and Dutch partner Maikel Scheffers lost 6-3, 6-4 to Tom Egberink from the Netherlands and Frenchman Michael Jeremiasz in their third place play-off.

“We haven’t played our best tennis the past few days and struggled to adjust to the grass if I’m honest,” added Reid, who is currently at a career high ranking of No.4 for singles and No.5 for doubles.

“Wimbledon is the only grass court event we play but it’s the same for all the players so it’s no excuse and we’ll keep working on improving our game as a doubles pair.”

Top seeds Shingo Kunieda from Japan and Frenchman Stephane Houdet won the men's title defeating Ronald Vink from the Netherlands and Frederic Cattaneo from France 6-4, 6-2.
