Over 400 people took part in the first Great British Tennis Weekend in Bedford on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th May. The weekend was a huge success with people of all ages given the opportunity to try tennis sessions at Bedford Park for free. This was just the first of four Great British Tennis Weekends in Bedford, so there is still plenty of opportunity to get involved in the lead up to Wimbledon and throughout the summer.

The event in Bedford Park also saw the opening of the ‘Window in the Park’ café and the launch of a brand new tennis programme. ‘Play Park Tennis’ has been set up to offer local people the chance to access affordable tennis sessions in beautiful surroundings at Bedford Park. Each session will be led by a qualified coach to not only welcome people into the friendly environment, but also to offer some fantastic advice around technique and tactics.

Bedford Town Mayor, Dave Hodgson, and local MP Richard Fuller joined us at the event.

Dave Hodgson said “The arrival of the summer is approaching, and in Bedford Borough that means more opportunities for us all to enjoy our beautiful parks and open spaces. This year a visit to some of our most picturesque spots has become even more attractive, as work to open up community facilities to be enjoyed by as many people as possible”.

Neil Twitchett, LTA Participation Manager said “It was a fantastic weekend only made better by all the enthusiasm everyone brought with them. We saw people of all ages getting involved and regardless of their ability, everyone had a great time. I’m really looking forward to our next Great British Tennis Weekend on 21st and 22nd June”.
