Bedfordshire Junior County Closed

Tuesday, September 06, 2011

The week started with the mini events which saw some excellent matches and some exceptional talent on display, showing a great promise that Bedfordshire may produce a future Wimbledon Champion. Callum Cawsey  narrowly beat Hamza Noor 10-5 in the boys mini Red Final and then did well to qualify into the Mini Orange event later in the week.

In the main draw finals, Alex Ciuro won both the 16+U and 18+U boys section having to overcome Harry Mabbit in both events. Karen Ncube reigned supreme in the girls events winning the 18+U final, beating Rosie Knight 6-4 6-4 in the final. More success in the 16+U girls for Helen Kight,  who played well to qualify to the final, then was awarded a walkover against Lara McCormack who had to pull out due to an injury picked up in her 14+U victory against Alison Lowe.  A good week for the 14 year old boys from Riverside, where Will Athow won the 14+U final against club mate Ben Faulkner, the boys then teamed up to narrowly beat Harry Boyle and Jordan Owens 7-5 6-7 10-8,

The prizes were presented by Paul Athow from On The Line Sports, LTA representative Ken Borneo  and Tournament Referees Neil Frankel & Rob Stean who thanked all involved. “We were pleased to host the event for the 9th year in succession and have seen some remarkable talent on show throughout the week. The event gives local players an opportunity to be crowned as County Champion and offers the up and coming players a chance to breakthrough into the county squads which will commence training again in Mid-September. It’s the success of tournaments such as these alongside the quality of players being developed within the county that really cement the players’ pathway to excellence”.
