The Cambridge Open Tournament was played in brilliant sunshine all week at the Cambridge Lawn Tennis Club and attracted 315 entries from all around the country. There were 18 different events from 8 and under through to the men’s open and 508 matches played over 8 days.
Pride of place goes to Yujiro Onuma who won the boys 12 and under singles losing only 5 games in 4 matches. He beat Rohan Iyengar also from the Cambridge Club in the final 6-0, 6-2. Yujiro then paired up with Essex’s Daniel Chamoun to win the boys 14 and under doubles title as well.
The girls 12 and under event was won by Lydia Sivirentsava from Huntingdon who beat Amelia Monteith from Kent 6-1, 6-2 in the final.
Megan Carmichael won the girls 16 and under final in a very high standard match beating Chaaya Malik 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 in the final. Chaaya had the consolation of hearing that she has been accepted as a lucky loser to play in the Road to Wimbledon finals in two weeks time.
Chaaya Malik was also runner up in the girls 14 and under final losing to Norfolk’s Monica Raviraj.
Sama and Chaaya Malik won the girls 14 and under doubles in the longest match of the week beating county rivals Megan Carmichael and Charlotte Laing 6-4, 4-6, 12-10 in the final.
In the older age groups Nick Ghaznavi reached the boys 16 and under final before losing to Noah Cutting (Suffolk) 5-7, 4-6 in the final.
Tommy Smalley from Essex won the boys 18 and under final; William Butler from Essex beat Tommy in the final of the men’s open event 6-4, 6-1.
Overall it was an excellent week of tennis enjoyed in glorious sunshine.
