The AEGON GB Pro-Series event at the Wirral was a great success with Yannick Mertens winning the men’s singles title on Saturday.
After the match Mertens said; “I had a good run in Auckland, and in reaching the final round of Australian Open Qualifying. This certainly has helped my form on returning to the indoor European season. The new courts here are really good, and it’s great to get 2012 off to such a good start.”
Chris Thelwall was delighted with the tournament "It is a major coup for the Wirral to have such a high level international tournament . The number of spectators that came to watch exceeded our expectations and we have already had enquiries about next years event."
He continued that "It is both inspirational and motivational to have young players embarking on their proffessional careers within our building. For our younger players, it was a fantastic opportunity to see the road that can lie ahead of them."
Tournament Director, Richard Joyner said; “I’m very pleased with the response from Wirral Council and the public in our return to The Wirral [after a break of over 10 years]. The Council, together with LTA funding, have done a great job in re-furbishing the indoor courts, and the number of spectators has created a really good atmosphere throughout the week.”
