Held over the weekend 13/14 April at Brooklands Sports Club the “35s” attracted a higher entry in all categories for the Over 35's County Championships.
The weather was less than kind. Saturday, bitterly cold (especially for the spectators) and very windy, with light showers. The players however coped admirably well. Sunday was better.
The new Mens’ Singles champion is David Trainor with Patrick Talbot a gallant runner-up. The Mens’ Doubles was won by David Trainor partnering Richard Grasby with Pete Bailo and Jason Tonge edged out of a match that went to a Championship Tie-Break.
Yes. These players really are 35+Over! All mentioned were playing for the first time in the competition and they could herald a bright future for our Inter–County team captained by Darren O’Donnell.
The new Ladies Singles Champion is Linda Walsh who won both her matches on Championship Tie-Breaks against determined opponents (Georgina Duncan and Fon Walker). The Doubles was won by Jeannette Harris (Ladies 35+Over Captain) and Alison Lewis. Linda Walsh and Annie Doyle were the Runners-Up.
Trophies were presented by our President, Barbara Newnes and our Chairman of Competitions and Tournaments, John Hilton. The event was refereed, without a hitch, by Alan Harmer.
A very big “Thank You” to Brooklands Sports Club and its members for allowing us to use their excellent courts and facilities. Also our appreciation for the warm welcome and the support we received from Caroline Yates (Hon Secretary) and Oli Jones (Club Coach).
