Aegon GB Pro-Series returns to the Wirral Tennis and Sports Centre

Men’s international pro tennis returns to the Wirral Tennis & Leisure Centre, Sunday 2 – Saturday 8 February 2014.

 The Aegon GB Pro-Series Wirral is an ITF Pro Circuit Men’s $10k event with a great blend of British and overseas players on the entry list. All the world’s top players sharpened their pro careers at this level, and a number of the players in action at the Wirral are steadily working their way up the rankings in their quest to reach the top.

The highest ranked player in the Men’s event is British number 5 Ed Corrie, currently ranked 297.

Corrie who is returning to the Wirral having won the title in 2013 said ‘I’m really looking forward to coming back. Obviously I have good memories from last year, and the atmosphere at the venue is excellent, particularly with the spectators who come out to watch the final. We are made to feel very welcome by everyone, and I hope to do well again this year’ 2013 runner-up Dan Smethurst is also returning. The Mancunian, has had a great start to the year having won Sunderland, and finishing runner-up in Glasgow the previous week, whilst 20 year old Liam Broady, from Stockport, who is currently at a career high of 468 is also in action.

The men’s qualifying event which is Sunday and Monday has a great deal of local interest with Jordan McCulloch (Ellesmere Port), Harry Meehan (Liverpool), George Morgan (Bolton), Imran Aswat (Chorley),

Dave Porter (Cheadle Hulme) and Seb Jackson (Wilmslow) all on the entry list Richard Joyner, Tournament Director, said ‘We’re really looking forward to returning to the Wirral. The event has a good blend of British and overseas players, with a number of Cheshire and Lancashire players involved in qualifying. Entry for spectators is free throughout the week, with courtside seating for the Men’s Singles final at 11.30am on Saturday 8 February. The whole week is a great way to see close up some of the world’s up and coming players’.

During the week, pupils from various local schools will be coming to watch the tennis, and they will also get the chance to meet some of the stars of the future. Wirral Tennis and Sports Centre coaching team are running a free tennis festival for infant and primary school children on the morning of the final (Sat 8th February 9.30 – 11.00).  Everyone across the borough is welcome to attend, before the main event of the day, the Men’s singles final at 11.30am.

Men’s qualifying is Sunday 2nd and Monday 3rd February, with the main draw Tuesday 4h to Saturday 8th February. Entry throughout the week is free to spectators, whilst you can follow the action through live scouring on www.lta.org.uk/aegongbpro-series
