On Friday 28th February – Sunday 2nd March 2014 the Under 18 Boys County Team played at Billesley Indoor Tennis Centre in Birmingham, competing in Division 2b.
The team consisted of: Jordan Grocott, Cameron Hogg, Adam Jones, Faris Mcgrath, Jac Newis, Jamie Oaks, Oscar Pope, Luke Wellens and James Wetton.
The other counties in the division were: Lancashire, Sussex and Dorset.
After the previous seasons promotion the team was in a positive mood ahead of our Division Two challenge.
Our first opponents would be Dorset who on paper would be tough opposition. With the help of a strong lower order we jumped into the lead and never looked back. James Wetton making his first County Cup appearance won both his matches in tight 3 set victories which would provide the backbone of the 6-3 victory.
Day two would be against our old foes Lancashire. The team did fantastically well to fight back into the match after looking down and out. Adam Jones playing his first county cup and taking up the daunting task of the Number one position for Cheshire took two rubbers against our neighbours. However, the team would be edged out losing 5-4.
The final day would put us against the eventual victors of Division Two Sussex. The team fought hard all day but eventually succumbed to an impressive Sussex display 5-1. Jac Newis took the only rubber on day three with an imperious performance and summed up Cheshire’s dogged attitude throughout the campaign.
Cheshire would finish 2nd in the group and sets us up for a promotion campaign next year with the majority of the team still being available for selection.
