Cheshire LTA is delighted to announce that Birchwood High School has been awarded the North Region’s Education Award in the 2017 Aegon British Tennis Awards.
Having previously been named Cheshire LTA’s Education Venue of the Year, Birchwood High School was put forward to a regional judging panel, who decided to recognise the school for this further Regional Award.
The Award recognised the efforts Birchwood High School strives to make to enable pupils of all ages to play tennis year-round. In addition to offering opportunities for its students to play tennis as part of the school’s curriculum, as well as before and after classes, the Awards panel also noted the schools efforts to train potential up-and-coming coaches. Having had the opportunity to attend an LTA Tennis Leaders course at the school, Year 9/10 pupils at Birchwood High School have been upskilled to run school games events and deliver taster session.
The Award panel also commended Birchwood High School’s link with a local housing association scheme to renovate a nearby Multi Use Games Area, with the aim of bringing more tennis to local residents.
Of the award, Rob Forster, President of Cheshire LTA said:
“It is an honour for Cheshire to have a regional winner in the Aegon British Tennis Awards. Stuart’s contribution towards local tennis in Cheshire has been outstanding and the award is fully deserved. We wish Stuart every luck as he now goes forward to be judged by a national panel for the title of national award winner.
The awards are a joint initiative between The Lawn Tennis Asociation (LTA), the Tennis Foundation, partner Aegon and 40 local/national tennis associations, including Cheshire. The Awards reward and champion the people who deliver tennis in communities across Great Britain.
As a Regional Award Winner, Birchwood High School will now be put forward to a national judging panel who will determine overall winners for each category. Those successful will then be invited to attend the national Aegon British Tennis Awards ceremony in London on 4th July 2017.
