The 65 & Over Men’s team were the defending British Inter County Champions, having overcome Surrey in the finals of 2015 and 2016. This year they faced a strong Kent team who had been undefeated throughout the year. The 2 singles and 3 doubles matches were all closely contested, and after the first round of 2 singles and 1 doubles match, Cheshire had managed to secure a 2 – 1 lead with John Hilton and the doubles pair of Bob Martin & Peter Clover winning in straight sets. Rod Boswell played the other singles match and just lost 4 – 6, 5 – 7. The match result then hung in the balance as Bob Martin & Peter Clover lost, leaving the match score at 2- 2, with John Hilton & Brendan Kearney playing what turned out to be the deciding rubber. Kent looked favourites to win when they took the 1st set 7 – 5, however, the Cheshire partnership fought back to make it one set all. The title was therefore decided on a final set tie - break. John & Brendan made a fast start and built up a substantial lead to give them 5 match points, however, the Kent pair fought back winning 3 points, but with the score at 9 – 7 the Cheshire pair forced an error from their opponents to secure the set 10 - 7. Cheshire were champions for the 3rd year running. Cue big celebrations!! Quite an outstanding achievement, and many congratulations to the team who have made Cheshire Tennis history.
