Last weekend the Cornwall 10U Girls team competed in the Aegon Group E County Cup Qualifying event at Salisbury Tennis Club. The team consisted of Harriet Bradley & Holly Drew, both coached by James Preston at Bolitho and Mounts Bay Schools in Penzance, and Daisy Chapman from Truro Tennis Club, coached by Ryan Fern, the Girls County Team Captain.
On the first day the girls beat Gloucestershire (3-1) and Wiltshire (4-0) to win their box and earn a place in the semi-finals. The next day they beat Avon (4-0), with all three girls winning their singles matches and Daisy & Harriet winning the doubles, to put them into the finals.
Playing Somerset in the finals, Daisy & Holly won their singles to put Cornwall 2-1 up going into the doubles. It was then all down to the doubles match to decide the tie and, after a tough first set, the girls won 5-3 4-1 and won the match 3-1. All three girls played some excellent tennis over the course of the weekend and fully deserved to win the Group.
They have now qualified for the Finals which will take place at Bolton Arena on 14th & 15th June. This is the first time that a Cornwall 10U girls’ team have qualified for the County Cup Finals. The girls will have to compete against teams from Cheshire, Hampshire & IOW, Lancashire, Middlesex, Staffordshire, Suffolk, & Warwickshire.
Hilary Webster, a representative of Tennis Cornwall, said ‘The girls have really done well this weekend. It’s such a great result both for them as players and for Cornwall tennis. We are very proud of our 10U girls’ team and wish them all the best for the Finals’.
