Penzance Vets 16 strong

Monday, September 14, 2009

Blazing sunshine greeted the players at 10am on 12th September 2009 for all who entered in the Club’s annual over 35 event.  Despite a withdrawl, due to a back injury before the tournament got under way and an injury in one of the first matches, sixteen hardy competitors battled through the mid-day heat and beyond before the title was settled.

For the round robin event, Senior Coach, Keith Songhurst, had awarded the handicaps and  conveniently left for London earlier that morning.

Sarah and David Stevens have already won the tournament three out of four times and despite the heaviest handicap, were favourites again this year.  The overall result depended on the outcome of the last match in which Elaine Bassett and Brett Dye played aginst Jane Brooks and Colin Trevorrow. After a hard faught match Elaine and Brett were the victors.  This gave Elaine and Brett the title by one game over David and Sarah.

Prizes were awarded by Bob Ratcliffe, Chairman of Penzance Tennis Club, who gave a special prize to Simon Lamb and Fiona Drew, not only new members to the Club and had entered the tournament for the first time, but for also coming a creditable 5th.

PS Keith Songhurst rang from London at 7.30pm to ask if it was safe to return!
