Success for Cornwalls U12 County Teams

Wednesday, July 07, 2010

Last weekend the Cornwall U12 Boys and Girls tennis teams travelled to Coombe Dingle, Bristol to compete in the 2010 Aegon County Cup. Both teams were drawn against Devon and Somerset in the early group stage, and although the boys showed considerable spirit, they went down to Devon by 3 - 1 score line.  Will James of Dragon playing at number 3 gaining the solitary win.  The boys then faced playing Somerset.  After the singles Cornwall were 2 - 1 down, Nick Peters of Newquay/Truro beating the Somerset number one 5 - 3, 4 - 0.  Needing the doubles to draw Nick and partner Isaac Barrow of Newquay took this to force a championship tie break to decide the match.  A nail biting tie break saw Cornwalll come out on top to secure second place in their group and a semi final place against Wiltshire.  Kieran Roskell-Thomas of Truro, made his county debut and gave a creditable performance against more experience opposition.  Wiltshire proved to strong for the Cornish boys and despite every effort they finished in fourth place.

Cornwall's girls found the higher rated and more experienced Devon opponents to strong and eventually went down 4 - 0.  Agnes Allison of Penzance, and Flossie Cameron-Webb of Newquay combined for the doubles and gained valuable match experience.  Their next match against Somerset saw Nadia Rawson of Dragon beat Ellie Gardner, although Ellie White of Truro/Redruth and Beth Cole of Dragon, despite brave performances could not secure wins and the match was lost 3 - 1.  The Sunday saw Cornwall's girls playing off against the Channel Islands, Ellie White and Nadia Rawson gaining a win apiece.  A close doubles victory followed to ensure the team eventually finished in fifth place.

The players were supported by team captains Malcolm Peters and James Brobin together with various parents, and the weekend was a resounding success as all players represented their county with pride and determination.
