The future of British tennis in Cornwall and Devon

Tuesday, August 02, 2011

Flybe are providing the opportunity to support Devon and Cornwall’s best tennis talent. The future of British Tennis is here within Devon and Cornwall and Flybe will support them all the way. Devon and Cornwall LTA have worked very closely with Flybe for the last 2 years to provide opportunities for all from a beginner to performance player. The players start within the Flybe Challenge playing and competing within there own coaching programme, when they have developed and want the next challenge move up to the Flybe Mini Master where they would compete around the local clubs or county. If the players compete regionally or nationally and have been identified through the Talent Id system they will be selected to represent TEAM Flybe.

TEAM Flybe provides the players to work with Lucie Ahl former GB womens no.1, coach to top GB women and consultant to High Performing Tennis Centres. Debbie Hale  the Talent Performance Co-ordinator and Lucie Ahl provide a opportunity for the selected across Devon and Cornwall aged 8 to 10 yrs a chance to train to together, support at local tournaments, travel and compete further afield as they learn the life of a tennis player.

Recently Lucie Ahl and Debbie took a trip Glasgow to compete against Scotlands best, watch and experience Davis Cup. With the u9’s travelling and competing in Jersey. This week the u8’s had a training camp at Esporta Devonshire Plymouth.

The u8’s camp was formed of Archie Graham of Falmouth, Albert Evans of Launceston&Wadebridge, Louis Davey of Tarka Tennis Centre, Daniel Mountford of Exeter, Sammy Broomhead of Taunton and Will Morrish of Tarka Tennis but unfortunately couldn’t attend.

The day consisted of 45 minutes physical warm up and conditioning exercises before a tennis warm up and skills. Followed by tactical / skill development encouraging the players to always develop the fundamentals.

Debbie Hale  “The players worked very hard, they all have individual qualities and we need to keep the players disciplined on the court and enjoying the game as long as possible to ensure they fulfil their potential. The game is starting earlier and ending later, so they have a lot of hours on court, matches to compete and skills to develop”

This is a great opportunity and the players will continue to develop with these type of sessions. The next TEAM Flybe Event will be at the Torbay Open in Torquay week of the 3rd August when the TEAM will be competing against many other players from across the country.
