A record entry of over 240 players spread across 22 events ensured an incredibly busy and action-packed week of tennis at Newquay's Heron Tennis, for this year's Newquay-Heron Open.
Because of the tournament's Grade 3 status and growing reputation as a top-quality event, many strong players from all over the Country made the effort to travel to Newquay to take part.
With so many matches to be played, good weather was needed, especially after the rain and wind affected first Saturday, and the weather cooperated with 5 days of fantastic sunshine, even on the tournament BBQ Night.
Despite the influx of traveling players there were many successes by Cornwall's home-grown players, including some of Heron's very own. Please see results table below with Cornish players in bold.
Although facing strong opposition Heron-based players Claire Tresidder and Adam Hayward took the ladies and mens open titles respectively with Adam going on to team up with Heron Director of Coaching, Steve Askey to win the mens doubles title.
There were cheers all around when Newquay brother and sister combo Ryan and Lauren Norton squeezed home in a very hard fought match in the mixed doubles against fellow Heron players Emma Welch and Rhys Ellis-Davies.
There were many more successes for local players in the junior events and worthy of special mention are Newquay boys Finn Leverton and Dan Ogden for winning the boys 14's doubles and Oshi Leverton who played a great match to win the boys 12's singles title, after a well contested final against Nick Peters, who had knocked out some much higher rated players on his way to the final.
The future is also looking good for Heron players, Max Cameron-Webb did a great job in winning the boys 10's singles and Charlie Standen coming a good runner-up in the Boys 9's singles.
So it was a fantastic week and many, many thanks must go to all the tournament sponsors and an especially big thank you to tournament referee, Sue Eames for her incredible expertise and patience in organizing the whole schedule of matches (over 600 in total!). Thank you, Sue.
This weekend sees the club returning back to normal with the usual programme of coaching and fun tennis activities for everyone to join in. If you would like any further information, please give the friendly team at Heron a call on 01637 877 555.
