This years Road to Wimbledon County Finals sponsored by HSBC was held at Heron Tennis Centre on Sunday June 12th. This event is normally played outside but the ‘Cornish Summer’ descended into ‘Autumn’ and it rained & rained….! Fortunately the indoor courts were available so the ‘battle commenced’.
It was great to see so many young players who are not known on the ‘County radar’ representing their clubs and some exciting tennis was played by all.
With a full consolation event taking place, all were guaranteed several matches and the more experienced players had the chance to win the opportunity of the ‘Road to Wimbledon Experience’.
The semi finals for the girls were played between Agatha Evans (Launceston) and Alisa Cole (LevertonWilliams) and Amy Johns (Penzance/LevertonWilliams) and Flossy Cameron-Webb (Heron). Alisa and Amy the two finalists entertained the spectators with an excellent 3 set match, concluding in a close tie break with Alisa edging ahead by only 2 points.
The boys gave us a similar entertainment and examples of excellent tennis. The semi finals were fought out between Finn Leverton (LevertonWilliams) and Luke Smith (Truro) and Kieron Butter (Truro) and Ben Lakeman (Penzance). The final between Kieron Butter and Luke Smith was a hard fought battle and yet another great match to watch with Kieron the more experienced of the two claiming victory.
