Newquay Junior Academy win schools tennis competition

Wednesday, May 29, 2013

Heron tennis was the venue for this year’s Newquay area Primary Schools Team Tennis Competition. The Newquay event is part of a County-Wide series where the winners from each local area go through to take part in the County Final.

The competition for year 3 & 4 players was well organised by teacher John Scott from Tretherras School and Paul Roberts, Heron Tennis Development Officer, made sure everything ran smoothly on the day.

The following teams took part in the competition, Newquay junior A ,Newquay junior B ,Summercourt ,St Columb Major ,St Columb Minor A,St Columb Minor B, and there was some really super tennis played by everyone.

The first part of the competition featured group matches and then it was time for the knock out stages.

The first semi-final was between the two strong teams from Newquay Junior Academy and after 4 very close matches the A team won against the B team and made it through to the final.  The other semi-final was contested between the Blue School and Summer court. Again the matches were close and in a great effort, especially for a small school, the Summercourt team made battled through to the final.

With many of Newquay Junior Academy’s players being regular players at Heron it was going to be a tough ask of the Summercourt players and despite the teams sharing the first two matches, Newquay’s strength in depth proved too much for the battling Summercourt team

Fortunately, both the finalists qualify for the next stage and we wish them well with this.

Lastly, but by no means leastly, a very special thank you to all the Sports Leaders from Tretherras Schools and to Ann Williams of Tennis Cornwall for all their hard work and great help in making this event so successful.
