Open Day is a Huge Success at Penzance TC

Tuesday, May 20, 2014

Months and weeks of preparation have gone into Penzance Tennis Club’s big Open Day which was part of the nationwide campaign “Great British Tennis Weekend” and the organisers could not have asked for a better outcome.

The weather on Saturday was simply perfect for tennis and consequently the courts at Penlee Park were buzzing from 10am right through to 3pm. Starting with the very youngest mini tennis players and ending with adults, everyone was welcome to have a free go at tennis and enjoy the lovely clubhouse facilities as well as free tea, coffee, juice and cake provided by the club’s award-winning First Service Cafe. More than 170 people of all age groups signed in at the event and, as a result of the taster sessions, 27 adults have enrolled for a free coaching course at the club.

Tennis Manager Martin Coates and his team of coaches were kept busy throughout the day. Many playing and committee members were also on hand to provide information about the club and hit with the newcomers. The atmosphere on and off court was absolutely electric and a big thank-you must go to the Newlyn Guides who provided a wonderful tombola, junior committee representative Anna Clemens for holding a cake stall and selling jewellery, Whirlwind Sports and club sponsors Ocean BMW who ensured that there was enough to see and do for spectators and participants alike.

The club was also fortunate to receive a visit from the new Town Mayor David Nebesnuick and his wife Susan. Club Chair Trevor Newborn and some of the staff even managed to persuade the mayor to go on court and show off his tennis skills.

Everyone who attended had a good time and the club is hopeful to have encouraged many more people to pick up a racket and play tennis in the future. For anyone who has missed the open day there is still a chance to become involved in the club. Visit www.penzancetennisclub.co.uk  for essential information or contact Birte Hosken in the office on Mondays from 2- 4pm, Tuesdays from 1-5pm, Wednesdays from 9am-1pm or Fridays 1-3pm.
