The final of the Babolat sponsored Winter Mixed Doubles League was held at Heron Tennis Centre, Newquay on Sunday. The final was contested between Truro A, winners of the East Division, and St Ives A, who overtook Redruth A on the last match of the season to take the West area division.
Truro were represented by Rob Williams, Chris Waters, Lara Healey and Helen Wright, and St Ives fielded Jim Brown, James Full, Meg Wignall and Carolyn Brown.
This final proved be rather a one sided affair with Truro running out comfortable winners, only dropping one set in the process. Meg and Carolyn were unlucky to lose the Ladies doubles 10-8 in the match tie break, but otherwise Truro were not really troubled, and they take the Winter League trophy for the first time in 11 years.
The Summer League fixtures start this week, and Truro Mens A team will be looking to better last season's performance and challenge current champions Newquay A. Newquay B and Redruth A both promoted from County One last year will undoubtedly find life tougher in the top flight. Truro A Ladies will seek to retain the Premier Division title but last year's runners up Hayle A will hope to go one better this time around.
It is pleasing to see additional ladies teams this year from the Newquay and St Ives clubs, and a ladies team from Perranporth for the first time in many years which is evidence of the increasing interest from that area.
