The opportunities for people with any sort of disability to access and enjoy tennis in Cornwall are continuing to grow and this week Newquay’s Heron Tennis Centre was the scene for a very special event for Cornish youngsters.
As part of the Project-ability programme, a scheme set-up to provide sporting opportunities for youngsters with disabilities, Heron was running a day of tennis activities for 40 secondary school aged children from all over Cornwall. The day was put together and run by Steve Hillman, Cornwall’s inclusion officer, and Paul Roberts from Heron and featured a range of fun tennis drills and games in the morning followed by an afternoon of friendly tennis competition.
It was a really lovely day and the effort and enthusiasm, not to mention great tennis as well, on display was a real credit to all the youngsters present and Paul and Steve would like to say a very big thank you and well done to all the players. Further thanks must also go to all the coaches, teaching staff and support staff who played their part in such a successful day for everyone.
The club and coaches at Heron are extremely welcoming and encouraging to anyone with any sort of disability and the weekly programme features sessions for players with physical and learning disabilities and also for anyone with any sort of mental health issues, low-confidence etc. There are specialist tennis wheelchairs available for anyone with mobility issues and all other equipment is available as well.
The disability tennis programme, both in Newquay and increasingly in other areas, is helping many people to get fitter, develop new skills, make friends and have fun and please do get in touch if you, or anyone you know, is interested in finding out more.
