The seventh Maryport Open saw a record 116 players take part in over twenty events over six days of fantastic competition all played out in a great spirit.
As usual, players came from all over Cumbria and from as far afield as York, London, Scotland, Lancashire and the North East, but this year saw something of an international flavour with locally based players from France and Spain taking part as well as an holidaying Australian in the under ten event.
The quality of play from the under 8 events through to the adult doubles was very high with referee David Wise saying;
“The Maryport Open is now one of the main competitive highlights on the Cumbrian Tennis calendar and is a great way of getting into shape for the county championships which follow on from our event.
"We try to ensure that every player, parent and family member receives a warm welcome and it has been great to see a record number of entries this year”.
The competition could not run without volunteers, helpers and those who have made donations and the club would like to thank fellow referee and organiser Frank Underwood, committee members Pat Taylor, Celia Underwood, parent and committee helpers and Brian Taylor and the Netherhall Sports Centre for the use of the facilities.
