Sunday 16th December saw a very special tennis competition take place at Silloth Sports Hall.
Since 2003 Silloth Tennis Club have been running yearly club championships at different age group levels and this was the tenth time we had held the 8&U Mini Red event.
Over the years this event has seen no less than 7 county champions take part and win and it is often seen as the stepping stone for future success. To celebrate the special occasion the first ever winners from 2003, Ben Gribbon and Aimee Gray were invited back to present the trophies and watch a few matches before getting their photos taken with the winners.
Despite a lower turn-out due to illness and Christmas commitments, the competition was fierce and after the group stages it was left to Ellis Mattinson and Michael Stanwix and Abigail Mossop and Libby Millican to contest the finals with Ellis and Abigail the victors.
Sophie Hetherington narrowly squeezed out Darci Slack in the consolation final.
Performance of the day went to debut player Jackson Slack who, despite being only 5, played with a determination and attitude that bodes very well for the future.
