Cumbria Road To Wimbledon Finals 2013

Tuesday, July 30, 2013

Eden Lawn Tennis Club played host to the Cumbria Road to Wimbledon county finals.

With 7 players making the boys finals at a very welcoming Eden Lawn Tennis Club, the day was set up well with lots of sun.  The quarter-finals saw Chris Edge, Robert Cruickshank, Marc Oligvie & Louis Glaves advance (over Nicolas Knowles, Matthew Johnson & Jacob Matthews).  Edge & Glaves made comfortable progress to the final.  They are rivals and friends so it was well set for a great match.  Glaves won the first set and was ahead in the 2nd but Edge managed to pull back to win the second.  It went down a match tie break.  Louis Glaves edged ahead and continued to add to his lead to clinch the match & title.  Well done Louis as he was runner up last year. Louis won 5-3, 3-5, 10-6.

Some great tennis was seen by all, the boys should be proud of their efforts.  The supporters were wowed by the standard of the final and the efforts the boys have put in.

The Girls’ finals had been whittled down to 2 due to availability. They girls event actually had to be postponed from the original date because the majority of girls who made the finals were actually involved in the 12U National County Cup finals that weekend! But on the rearranged date Sophie Cairns was up against the previous winner Megan Almond.  There were some great rallies, a good show of technique and the potential the girls’ have but Megan was too strong for Sophie who is rated a bit lower.  Megan won 6-0, 6-0.  Good luck Megan at Wimbledon.
