After another long rally the match score was 12-11 to Ethan, everyone in the hall was physically and mentally drained...
His opponent Casey, completely forgetting what he was doing, dashed off for a drink at the other end of the hall, Ethan was offered a drink but declined. The next point has both players moving each other around the court as if their lives depended on it, forehand, backhand, even volleying until Casey eventually over hits a backhand going for the winner and Ethan is the winner … of the consolation final.
That is how good the West Cumbria mini red tour finals have been. The top 8 boys and top 8 girls gathered together at Maryport to fight for the right to call themselves the champion and what an event it was as Chatsworth’s Logan Cowan and Silloth’s Anna Fisher finally made it into the winners enclosure after victories over Lorton’s Daniel Woodcock and Chatsworth’s Lauren Bell respectively. With Logan also crowned leaderboard winner along with Ullswater’s Zoe Dalton and consolation events won by Ullswater’s Ethan Rudd and Silloth’s Sophie Hetherington and a ton of fantastically even matches it was a great advert for Cumbrian tennis and the dates for next year’s tour will be going into the diary very soon!
After a presentation made by Frank Underwood from Maryport Tennis Club, Ken Watson from Ashfield tennis club and Cumbria LTA chairwoman Pat Taylor organiser David Wise commented;
“As last year, the Mini Red Tour proves that we have quality players in the area who are always looking for local competition in which they can improve their game. The tour has been very competitive but has also been played in a very good spirit and I personally can’t wait for next year’s tour”.
