Tuesday, November 12, 2013

A doubles masterclass was held at Chatsworth Tennis Club on 29 October 2013 for some performance players in Cumbria. The coaches who led the session were Mike Woods and Nick Brown.

Nick Brown is a Warrington born former professional player. He won the British Under 21 championship in 1980, the national senior championships in 1983. He has represented Britain in Davis Cup, played on the ATP tour and in all four Grand Slams, beating Goran Ivanisevic (10th seed) in four sets in the second round of Wimbledon in 1991. He was a doubles quarter finalist at the Australian Open in the same year. His career-high rankings were World No 145 in singles and 42 in doubles.

Nick has coached overseas in several countries and developed a number of international players including Tim Henman as a junior. He has been coach to the GB Federation Cup Team (1998-2003) and the Polish Davis Cup Team. He is currently the GB 12U Boys Team Captain and consultant to the LTA.

Mike Woods is the LTA Talent Performance Coordinator for the North East and Cumbria, dealing primarily with the 12U age group, working closely with the Performance Centres in the area. Coupled with this role, he is National 10U Boys Age Group Captain. He was formerly the LTA 16U National Coach for the North East & Cumbria.

Several coaches also attended and gained licence points.  There were 24 players involved from 11 of Cumbria's 33 clubs, coached by 10 of Cumbria's 14 LTA licensed coaches.  Parents, players and  coaches were very appreciative. organised by Cumbria LTA Chairman Pat Taylor with support of Mike Woods, TPC.
