Fun Doubles Day Brings Out Competitive Spirit In West Cumbrian Tennis Players

Monday, November 18, 2013

The first West Cumbrian “Family Fun Doubles” day proved to be a great success as 22 players aged from 9 to 70 plus took to the courts at Maryport Tennis Club.

The idea of the event was for adults to team up with junior players or for friends to play together and what transpired was a fantastically competitive competition as 27 “best of 5 games” doubles matches ended with Thomas O’Fee and Louis Pickering edging out Megan Almond and Anna Fisher 3 games to 2 in a wonderfully close final.

The event, which was funded through the Cumbria Community Foundation “Ashfield Tennis Club” fund was organised by coach David Wise who commented; “Of all of the many competitions we have held recently this has to be the best. Although it was really competitive there was a real sense of enjoyment about the place and it was great to see parents playing with their children, Grandparents with their Grandchildren and friends together. I also believe it was a great exercise for parents who don’t play to realise what their children go through on court and I think they were genuinely surprised how good they were, so much so that as a result of today we have 2 new adult members!”

The event was such a success it is now going to be a regular fixture on the club’s competitive calendar.
