CUMBRIA COUNTY CLOSED
A BIG SUCCESS!
9 days of fantastic Cumbrian Tennis finally came to an end as Laura Steel hit the winning shot in the Ladies doubles final thus sealing a 6-3, 7-5 triumph for Laura and partner Katie Bell. Another County Champs were over and that slightly sad, end of summer/back to normality feeling all too quickly enveloped everyone involved.
It had been such a glorious 9 days as well. A time when the best Cumbrian players came together to fight for those historical and coveted titles, a time when personal rivalries were renewed and a time when even the rain fell at the right time!
This was Cumbria and this was their famous county champs; there is nothing else like it, and nothing else to compare to it. It just has that special feeling that nobody can put their finger on yet everyone can sense. A place where the social side is almost as important as the results on the courts, where the mini courts are full with players old and young and where the banter is sharp and the daily games of cards are the norm.
From the Mini Events at Ulverston where the Blaydes boys Billy and Freddy proved how sharp their games are at the moment by winning 5 titles between them to Chatsworth in Carlisle where Katie Bell collected an amazing 2 singles and 5 doubles titles (surely a record) there really was something for everyone and in Cameron and Logan Cowan we even had two fans of the week who nearly put in as much time as the Referees!
And something that sums up the enduring allure of this wonderful event? It’s got to be the official highlight of the week as Ben Clarke puts behind him 7 years of trying to finally win his first county Tennis title in the Men’s doubles!
What a week!
