New Tennis Players Take Their First Competitive Steps

Thursday, January 02, 2014

Maryport Tennis Club saw 8 Mini Red (under 8) tennis players take to the court for their first ever competition during the Christmas break.

Played on the mini red Badminton courts in the hall at Netherhall Sports Centre the event was designed to give a gentle introduction to competitive tennis and proved to be a real success.

Leighton Almond won the event just beating Zia Marshall in the final with Charlie Roach coming third and Tyler Rundle winning the consolation event.

Organiser David Wise said: “After weeks of training it’s important for our young players to get their first taste of competition and an event like this is ideal as it’s pretty low key but lots of fun and I am really pleased with how it has gone today”. “Funding from the sale of the Ashfield club in Workington through Cumbria Community Foundation is used to provide local coaching and competitive opportunities and this event is one of many that run throughout the winter months to keep Tennis on our doorsteps and from this many of these players will progress onto the Mini Red Tour that has been running for the last three years”.
