Maryport Girls Smashing Up The Tennis Courts Of West Cumbria As They Top Junior League

Tuesday, July 29, 2014

The annual West Cumbrian Under 16 Junior Tennis League is having its most exciting year yet with five of the seven teams still in with a chance of the title with one third of matches still to play.

Currently topping the table are “Maryport 2” the all-girl team who have blasted their way to the top with a vibrant mix of attacking and skilful tennis all played out in a 90% male dominated league.

Maryport coach and league organiser David Wise said: “The girls have responded really well to having a girls only team this year and the team spirit they bring to the courts is great to see. Like a lot of sports tennis has problems in attracting girls to competitive events and we are hopeful that this group of girls will be seen as a great inspiration for the younger players we have in the area. The league has been fantastic this year with 51 players taking part from 7 teams and with the title going to the wire it’s going to be really exciting to see who comes out on top.”
