Cumbria Girls Play Well At County Cup

Monday, March 03, 2014

Cumbria 18&U County Cup girls team travelled to Wrexham to play this year's event.

Team captain, Caroline Clutterbuck sent in this report about the weekend:

Day 1
Firstly playing singles against Hereford & Worcs.  Katie lost in 3 great sets of tennis. Our 2 wins came from Emily with a strong performance at No2 & Rebecca with an excellent game at No5.  This left us 2-4 after singles.

Next for South of Scotland, an inspired performance by Jocelyn gave us our only point in the second singles matches.  Katie played an amazing first set but her opponent stepped up her game to win in 3. Habiba & Rebecca fought hard in long matches but were unable to secure any points.  Megan played well throughout but was not able to win.  We were now 1-5 down with doubles to play.

Day 2
This started as a must win all against H&W but with the new format of No Ad deuce deciding several games made it very difficult to win.  There was some very good doubles played the opposition were solid. We finished 2-7 to H&W.

The doubles against South of Scotland was not played due the match having been decided and they had illness within their team and no reserves.

The girl's played some very good tennis.  The effort and attitude of the girl's was great.  It was made difficult changing the line up with a few weeks to go (Harri Proudfoot injured & Grace Eland unavailable) but the girls who played were fantastic the whole weekend and should be proud of themselves.

I would like to thank Isla Bell for being a very valuable reserve and Tracey Breese for help and support over the weekend.
