Tremendous Performance by Cumbria's 14&U Boys County Cup Team

Wednesday, May 23, 2018

Congratulations to all of the Cumbrian Boys Tennis Team whom have been competing in Nottingham at the LTA 14&U County Cup National Finals from 18th-20th May.

The team beat South of Scotland, Durham & Cleveland and Lancashire two weeks ago to qualify for the finals for the first time in Cumbria`s history and didn`t disappoint over the weekend.

County Cup Qualifying Champions.

In their round robin group they beat Kent 4-2, Yorkshire 4-2 and narrowly lost to Avon 4-2. Unfortunately Cumbria ended up 3rd in the group after a 3-way tie at the top, leaving Cumbria one rubber short, so Kent progressed to the National Final and Cumbria went into the 5th/6th play off with Middlesex whom they duly dispatched 4-2.

To put the Boys' achievements into perspective Cumbria have never previously qualified for the National Finals, have never beaten Lancashire or Yorkshire at U14 Level and actually won three of their four matches played at the National Finals and even beat one of the finalists.

The team was captained by local coach Jon Griffin, who stated: "The boys team spirit, hard work and together helped make this outstanding achievement for such a small County possible, all of the boys should be proud of the contribution they made to the team".

The Cumbrian boys punching so much above their weight even prompted a congratulatory email from LTA Tournament Director Julie Piper in London!
