Evans and Broomhead shine for county with top honours in Wimbledon display

Two Derbyshire tennis players have been savouring success at Wimbledon.

Both Andy Evans and Ashley Broomhead took home titles after winning in different categories at the British Veterans' Grass Court Championships at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.

Evans won the men's 40 singles after a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Johnny Barr, from the East of Scotland, in the final.

Now a coach in Jersey, Evans, seeded fifth after entering as a wildcard, reached the last round without dropping a set – before beating the number four seed.

Broomhead, meanwhile, teamed up with Leicester's Richard Wayman to win the men's 50s doubles, as they overcame Kent's Michael Guntrip and Surrey's Phil Brook in the final 7-6, 7-5.

But the 52-year-old was denied a double in the men's 50s singles as he fell to defeat against Alec Allen, seeded number one, in the final.

Broomhead won the first set 6-4 but Allen, from Middlesex, hit back to win the next two 6-2, 6-4 to claim the crown.

More than 600 competitors took part in the championships, with the age groups ranging from over-35s to over-80s.

Derbyshire county captain Dennis Archer said he was impressed by the efforts of both men.

He said: "Both players did incredibly well and have plenty to celebrate.

"Broomhead was unlucky not to clinch both titles but I'm very pleased he won the doubles.

"And Evans was very impressive because he dropped only three games on his way to the final.

"He played for Derbyshire for about 15 to 20 years and I think there's a good chance he could be called up to play for the World Veteran's Championships."
