Katy set for tennis stardom

Thursday, August 26, 2010

A rising tennis star from Pinxton has netted a title double at the Sheffield Junior Open Tournament.

Katy Wilson (14) beat Olivia Noble in the 14 and under final and then went on to beat Kim Atkinson in the 16 and under final. Kim is ranked number one at both the 16s and 18s in Yorkshire and fourth nationally at 18 and under.

On the way to the final, Katy also beat Laura Twidale who is Lincolnshire's number one at 16s and 18s.

Proud dad Peter said: "When you think she has managed to beat a girl who is ranked fourth in the country at the under 18 level - it is astounding!"

Katy, who attends Frederick Gent School, has been playing tennis since she was eight and has been coached for the last three years by Phil Wilcock.

This year she also won the West Bridgford Open in July and has represented the county's under 14 side and under 18 side where she won all her matches.

Katy trains at the Derbyshire Tennis Centre in Derby and the Graves Tennis Centre in Sheffield. Peter says Katy's ultimate ambition is to become a profesional tennis player, but if not she will go into coaching. At the moment Katy is also looking to secure a tennis scholarship.
