Relegation confirmed for O&B after a sixth successive defeat

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

RELEGATION from Division One is certain for Ockbrook & Borrowash men's first team after their sixth consecutive defeat in the Derby Area Tennis League.

They finished fifth in the top flight 12 months ago but they have failed to pick up a point during this year's summer season.

The loss which confirmed they would drop to Division Two came against David Lloyd, who beat them 8-1.

But they will still be looking to get a first win on the board when they play their final match against fellow strugglers Ashbourne next week.

Church Broughton, meanwhile, claimed their second win of the season with a 7-2 success over David Lloyd seconds.

The victory came courtesy of Callum Loveridge and Andy Hadley, who won all three of their sets.

In Division Two, Rolls-Royce seconds have failed to avoid relegation following back-to-back defeats in their last two matches.

Their 8-1 loss to Burton, who moved to the top of the division thanks to the win, was followed by a 6-3 defeat at Duffield thirds.

On form for the home side were Richard Brown and Dave Dawkins, who took three sets. It was Duffield's first win of the season.

Ashbourne look vulnerable in Division Three, despite a win and a narrow defeat in their past two matches.

The club's second team beat bottom-of-the-table Darley Dale firsts 6-3, with three sets from Steve Hulme and Zander Drummond but followed that with a 5-4 defeat at the Derbyshire Tennis Centre.

Both they and Darley Dale look likely to be relegated, while David Lloyd thirds, with five straight wins, are one win away from the title.

Ashbourne's third team, however, look strong in Division Four, after a 6-3 win over Woodlands seconds moved them up to third.

At the other end of the table, Melbourne suffered a 5-4 loss to the Central United Reformed Church seconds, despite three sets from Alex Slater and Mark Rossi.

In Division Five, Stanton won 5-4 at Church Broughton thirds, Hector Taylor and Ian McDowall taking three sets, in vain, for the home side.

Second-placed Ockbrook & Borrowash thirds continued their promotion push with a 7-2 win over Little Eaton seconds, thanks to Philip Saddler and Rob Day, who claimed three sets each.

In Division Six, three sets each for Adam and Laurie Illingworth was not enough to save Belper Meadows seconds from a 5-4 defeat to Woodlands thirds.

But it was enough to see Belper promoted along with Ashbourne fourths.

In the ladies' section, Ashbourne claimed a crucial 6-3 win over basement club Woodlands in their bid to stay in Division One.

In Division Two, Duffield seconds returned to the top of the table with a 6-3 win over Ockbrook & Borrowash seconds – coming despite three sets from Alison Harvey and Natalie Faulkner.

Ockbrook & Borrowash thirds also suffered defeat in Division Three, losing 6-3 to Woodlands thirds.

Doubles partners Pat Graham and Celia Smith won all three of their sets for the losing side, while the victory was not enough to move Woodlands out of the relegation zone.

Duffield fourths, meanwhile, edged to a narrow 5-4 win over Rolls-Royce seconds to keep their Division Four promotion hopes alive.

In the mixed section, both Ockbrook & Borrowash teams were beaten 8-1 in Division One.

The first team lost at the Derbyshire Tennis Centre, while the seconds were beaten at David Lloyd.

Billie Carrigan and Steve Gillott took their three sets for the winners, for the loss of only six games.

David Lloyd seconds also triumphed 5-4 at Ashbourne firsts, courtesy of three sets from Austin Ashman and Susie Grindle.

Ashbourne's second team had better fortunes in Division Three, with an 8-1 win over Darley Dale seconds.

In Division Four, Woodlands seconds achieved their first win of the season, triumphing 7-2 at Ockbrook & Borrowash thirds.
