Teenager Clarke shows his promise by reaching semi-finals of junior champs

RISING star Jay Clarke made it through to a semi-final at the AEGON British Junior National Tennis Championships in Bournemouth.

Clarke, from Littleover, reached the last four of the Under-14s boys' singles before his run was ended by top seed Daniel Little.

The 13-year-old wild card opened his campaign at the West Hants Tennis Club by knocking out fifth seed Bjorn Thomson, coming back from a set down to win 4-6, 7-5, 6-0.

And he continued his good form in the next round, defeating Vincent Gillespie in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

Clarke took on Little for a place in the final but went down 6-3, 6-2.

However, the Derby player was pleased with his showing in the tournament, whose past winners have included the current British number ones, Andy Murray and Elena Baltacha.

"It was my target to get through to the semis and I did that," said Clarke.

"I've taken a seed out of the tournament and I'm positive going forward.

"It was good to finally beat Bjorn as I had not beaten him before and actually lost to him on this court here last year.

"And the last time I played, Vince I was quite defensive, so this time I decided that I was going to go for it a bit more.

"He is very good at just keeping the ball in the court and carrying the point on, so I went for a few of my shots and it paid off."

Sam Ashcroft, from Breaston, celebrated victory in the 37th Jack Britton Singles Trophy at Nottingham Tennis Centre.

The number three seed won his first two matches for the loss of only two games.

In the semi-final, the 18-year-old, who trains at David Lloyd in Derby, beat second seed Ross Savage, from West Bridgford TC, 6-1 7-6.

That win set up a final showdown against top seed Vasya Kusmartsev, a 16-year-old performance player from the Loughborough Tennis Academy.

In windy conditions, Ashcroft won the first set 6-4, thanks to a single break of serve.

The second set followed a similar pattern and Ashcroft served for the match at 5-3 but was unable to close out the match.

The set went to a tie-break and Ashcroft swept into a 6-0 lead, only for Kusmartsev to save all six match points.

Ashcroft, though, regained his composure to win the next two points and take the title 6-4, 7-6 (8/6).

Edward Oakenfull tasted international success at a seniors event in Finland.

The Duffield first team captain triumphed in the men's over-40s singles at the Scandinavian Open.

Oakenfull had to battle hard in his opening match against Finland's Esa Matilkainen, who took the first set 6-1.

But the Derbyshire player hit back to take the next two sets 6-3, 6-1.

He saw off another Finn in the semi-final, beating Juhana Kaipo 6-4, 6-2.

Oakenfull came up against experienced Swede Bjorn Shroder in the final and clinched the title in impressive style, winning 6-0, 6-2.

"I played some of my best tennis ever in the final," said Oakenfull.

"This is one of my biggest wins and will take me into the top 50 players in the world in the ITF rankings when they come out next week."

Oakenfull led Derbyshire's over-35s team at County Week in Eastbourne but could not save his side from being relegated.

Derbyshire lost all three of their matches, against Staffordshire (3-2), West of Scotland (3-2) and Essex (5-0).

That was despite the best efforts of Richard Harrison, who won his singles and doubles matches in the opening two fixtures.
