Horton and Rushby star to help Church Broughton get season up and running

Friday, July 01, 2011

Church Broughton's first win of the Derby Area League season has pulled them further away from the Men's Division One relegation battle.

After losing their opening two matches of the summer, they got their campaign up and running with victory away to Ockbrook and Borrowash.

The 7-2 win was largely thanks to Dave Horton and Ben Rushby, who won three sets each.

The result left their opponents and Ashbourne as the only two sides in the top flight yet to win a match.

Woodlands have moved to top spot in Division Two courtesy of a 7-2 triumph over Rolls-Royce seconds.

The new leaders had preceded that win with victory at home to Rolls-Royce firsts and again proved unstoppable on the grass courts against their second string.

A tight encounter between Duffield fourths and the Central United Reformed Church firsts saw the latter win 5-4.

Chris Simpson and Roger McKaig, who both claimed three sets each in the CURC's previous match against Duffield thirds – did the same at home to their fourth team.

Belper Meadows moved up to second place in Division Three after winning away at Lakeside.

Ian Maddison and Martin Jackson each took three sets to secure the 5-4 victory.

But David Lloyd's third team maintained their hold at the top of Division Three with a 6-3 win against the Derbyshire Tennis Centre.

The away win came thanks to three sets from Mark Knight and James Shepherd.

Littleover christened their newly relaid courts by winning 5-4 against Woodlands seconds in Division Four, with Nick Ussher and Andy Whitt unbeaten.

Stanton recorded their first victory of the season in Division Five against Little Eaton seconds and moved out of the bottom two as a result.

They won 6-3 at home, despite three sets from John Hart and Jack Bryan.

There was a fourth straight defeat for Rolls-Royce fourths, who lost 5-4 at Ockbrook and Borrowash thirds.

Philip Saddler and Steve Day helped clinch the victory by winning three sets each.

Rolls-Royce's fifth team, however, fared better in Division Six as they claimed their first win of the season.

Three sets from Rob Fraser and Steve Driscoll saw them to the 6-3 victory over Woodlands thirds, while Duffield fifths also recorded a first win – beating New Watchorn's second team 8-1.

Rain played havoc with some fixtures in the ladies' section but the last unbeaten record was broken in Division Two.

Rolls-Royce's top side suffered their first defeat this season, against Ockbrook and Borrowash seconds, narrowly going down 5-4.

The defeat came in spite of three sets from Alex Higham and Emilie Ravel for the home side.

In Division Four, Ashbourne seconds again lead the way after an emphatic 9-0 against bottom side Church Broughton thirds.

Their closest rivals, Belper Meadows seconds and Duffield fourths, however, still have games in hand.

Church Broughton's loss, meanwhile, was their fifth defeat in as many matches this season.

Duffield kept up the pressure on Ashbourne, with a 6-3 win at the Central United Reformed Church, which included three sets from Marianne Dammer and Julie Corne.

In the mixed section, there was disappointment for two David Lloyd teams in Division One.

The firsts conceded their match against Ashbourne, while their second team suffered a 5-4 defeat against Ockbrook and Borrowash seconds.

Gary Edwards and Natalie Faulkner contributed to the narrow home win, each winning three sets.

Littleover also had a close encounter in Division Two, overcoming Rolls-Royce seconds 5-4.

The home side won despite Adrian Cuthell and Susan Todd taking three sets each.

Rolls-Royce's first team won 7-2 at Duffield seconds with another three sets from Todd, this time partnering Richard Simkins.

In Division Three, Rob Eatherden and Deborah Hurst won three sets to help Darley Dale win 6-3 against Ashbourne seconds.

And there were comfortable wins for Stanton, Rolls-Royce 3 and Belper Meadows 2 in Division Five.
