Christchurch quake means veterans event is cancelled

Veteran Derbyshire player Andy Evans will not be playing at the 2011 Seniors World Team Championships – after the event was cancelled because of the New Zealand earthquake.

More than 100 people have been confirmed dead following the earthquake which struck South Island.

Evans, 44, was due to join Great Britain team-mates James Turner, Simon Curtis and Graham Neale in Christchurch to compete for the Dubler Cup but the International Tennis Federation has confirmed the event has been cancelled.

Federation president Ricci Bitti said: "We send our sincere sympathies to the people of Christchurch who have suffered so much due to the earthquake that hit their city.

"While we are, of course, relieved that all the players, captains and officials who were in Christchurch this week are safe, we are mindful of the loss of life and the large number of injuries that have occurred in Christchurch.

"We thank Tennis New Zealand and Canterbury Tennis for their outstanding efforts on behalf of the Seniors World Team and Individual Championships.

"We also thank the players for their support of both events and their willingness to play on in these difficult conditions."

Meanwhile, fellow county player Edward Oakenfull fell at the last hurdle at an International Tennis Federation senior circuit tournament in Ireland.

He reached the final of the men's over-40 singles competition at the Irish Indoor Veteran Championships, in Belfast, but lost 6-3, 6-7, 10-8 to Ireland's Liam Cassidy.

The 44-year-old, seeded two, received a bye in the first round and a walkover in the second, before beating Phil O'Neill 6-0, 7-6 in the semis.

He said: "Liam Cassidy represented Ireland in singles and doubles at the World Championships last year.

"He out-served me in the first set and he won it 6-3.

"He was up a break of serve in the second set and I twice came back to take it to a tie-break, which I won, and the match went to a final set champions' tie-break.

"I think I came very close to winning the title but he came through in the end."

Oakenfull and Cassidy then teamed up for the men's over-35 doubles but lost 6-1, 6-1 to number one seeds Garrett Barry and Carlos Miranda in the final.
