Under 14 county cup report 2011

Derbyshire were drawn against Yorkshire and east of Scotland on the first 2 days of the 2011 14 under inter county cup competition held at Graves to Sheffield between 16/18th April 2011.

Day 1 Saturday 16 vs. Yorkshire
Day 2 Sunday 17th April vs. east of Scotland
Day 3 Monday 18th April vs. Northumberland

The performance of all the Derbyshire boys ways of an extremely high quality throughout the weekend.

The team was lead by Sam Ferguson who demonstrated a real determination to maintain high quality depth and counter punching qualities.
His performances over the weekend guaranteed 3 singles wins out of 3 Jay Clarke and Tiran Sanghera were also playing in the team which meant the top 3 boys representing Derbyshire were all top 10 in the country and all have another year in 2012 to play representative county tennis next year.

Day One Report vs Yorkshire
Sam Ferguson playing at number one performed to his usual high standards and beat the Yorkshire number one Harry Skinner in three tight sets.

Tiran Sanghera started extremely slowly and it was evident he was short of match practice losing in two sets to the Yorkshire number two.

On day one without Jay Clarke, Tom Buchan played at number 3 and Jack Killip at number 4 against a strong Yorkshire side.

Doubles won 6-1;6-1 Jay Clarke/ Tiran Sanghera
Doubles lost 0-6;1-6 Jack Killip / Jonty Holthum

The final score was a 2-4 defeat

Day Two Report vs. East of Scotland
Day 2 saw the county playing the East of Scotland and with all players now available Derbyshire triumphed 6-0 with quality performances from all players. The team was extremely balanced with Tom Buchan playing a pivotal role at number four singles and James Ashcroft replacing Tom for the doubles.

It was evident on day two that having Jay Clarke available for both singles & doubles strengthened the whole team and this was demonstrated by no sets being lost throughout the day.

Doubles 2 Sam Ferguson/James Ashcroft       6-0;6-2
Doubles 1 Jay Clarke/Tiran Sanghera             6-2; 6-1

The final score was a 6-0 victory

Day Three Report vs. Northumberland
Day 3 was a third placed play off versus Northumberland. The county were 4-0 in the lead after the singles so fringe players were given valuable experience in the doubles
Final score being 4-2.

Doubles 2 Jack Killip/James Ashcroft            4-5;4-1;2-10 lost

The final score was a 4-2 victory 

The overall weekend was a great success and if the three boys born 1998 are available next year anything is possible.

As captain I would like to thank my assistant Leighton Lee for his valued contribution over the weekend and much needed support from Kate King and Diane Gibson.
