Allsopp encouraged as Ladies make a winning start in Winter Cup quest

Saturday, November 26, 2011

Derbyshire made a promising start to this year's AEGON Winter County Cup in Sheffield.

The county's ladies' team beat Somerset 6-3 in the first day's play at the Graves Tennis Centre and skipper Jayne Allsopp said she was increasingly confident of promotion from Division 4B.

Naomi Fellows, Kathryn Cook, Gemma Praditngam and Amy Harris all won their singles matches.

And partners Allsopp and Jenny Batty and Cook and Praditngam enjoyed victory in the doubles.

It left Derbyshire at the top of their group going into today's match against Gloucestershire, before they face Avon tomorrow.

Allsopp, playing for Derbyshire for the first time as captain after being ineligible to play in the summer, said: "I am more confident of promotion and I have some very talented players who showed this on the court.

"Some of the players were down in sets but they came back to win and impressed me with their fighting spirit.

"They will all try their best and the team will remain the same for the match against Gloucestershire.

"We've had time to recover and will have a team talk about our tactics before then."

Meanwhile, Derbyshire's men suffered a 7-2 defeat to Nottinghamshire at their first Winter County Cup Division 3B match in Hull.

Players Jacob East, Sam Ferguson, Mike Peel and Ben Rushby all made their debuts at county level for the team but James Rushby was the only one to win a singles match, before he and Chris Archer partnered up to win their doubles match.

They play Warwickshire today and non-playing captain Dennis Archer said it would be a difficult test.

He said: "Warwickshire will be tough and we think Dan Evans, who has played for Britain in Davis Cup, will represent them but we'll do our best."
