Sheffield's Alex Jewitt retained his men's singles and doubles titles on Sunday at the Esporta Cardiff Wheelchair Tennis Tournament, the penultimate NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour world ranking event to be held in Britain this season, as he maintained his bid to reach the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
With 14 Britons lining up for the men's singles at the three-day ITF Futures Series tournament at the Welsh National Tennis Centre, all four seeds reached the semi-finals with relative ease, with British No. 4 and 2010 National Champion Jewitt defeating his younger compatriot Josh Steels 6-0, 6-2 to earn a place in Sunday's final against Spanish second seed Daniel Caverzaschi.
Top seed Jewitt subsequently held off a strong challenge from Caverzaschi to clinch the final 6-3, 6-4, collect his third ITF Futures Series title of the season and maintain his world ranking inside the top 40.
"It was a good win for me. It's been a few months since my last tournament win, so to retain both titles, is extra pleasing," said Jewitt. "Dani's had some good results this year and so I knew it was going to be a tough and tight match, but thought that if I could execute my game plan I'd win. I felt I didn't find top gear, but served well and was able to back it up with good play at the back of the court."
Jewitt enjoyed a more dominant victory in the men's doubles, partnering fellow Briton Dermot Bailey. The duo eased to the title for the loss of just one game, that coming in the final as they defeated the young partnership of Edward Holt and Steels 6-1, 6-0.
Jewitt has now headed into the ITF 2 Series Nottingham Indoor, the final NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour event of 2011 in Britain, which began on Wednesday, 26 October.
