Treble tops for Tom as he drops only one set

TENNIS coach Tom Rushby claimed a hat-trick of titles at this year's Derbyshire County Closed Championships.

The 25-year-old won the men's singles, men's doubles and mixed doubles – dropping only one set in all three competitions.

He beat James Rushby 7-5, 6-2 in the final of the men's singles, before joining partner Simon Thornewill to beat James Rushby and Ben Rushby 6-4, 6-2 in the men's doubles.

In the mixed doubles, Rushby teamed up with Beth Rushby for their 6-7(2), 6-4, 1-0(6) victory over Sam Ashcroft and Gemma Praditngam.

Rushby, who was the top seed in all three draws, said it was thoroughly enjoyable and he was pleased with his performance.

He was among more than 100 players who competed in the PDHSports.com County Closed, which was held at the Duffield Tennis Club.

Players competed in more than 20 different categories, ranging from mixed under-8 singles to men's over-35 singles.

Rushby, who works as an academy coach for the MyTennis programme at Loughborough University, said: "It was a good week and it went very well – it's always a nice atmosphere at Duffield.

"It wasn't easy but I was quite pleased with how I did, particularly as I only dropped a set in the whole week and that was in the mixed doubles.

"I think it was literally the first time I had played a match since County Week in July so it was quite nice I was able to get back into it quickly.

"I guess I've got that level of play from when I played tournaments regularly before so it's good I could find it again.

"I also really enjoyed playing the mixed doubles with my sister and playing against my brothers. All-in-all, it was a fun week.

"Derbyshire has quite a few good players, some of whom train at Loughborough, and it was good to see them get together at Duffield."

Meanwhile, Spondon junior Sam Ferguson defended the boys' under-14 title he won at the championships last year – and landed the boys' under-16 crown.

Ferguson, 13, who won the boys' under-12 competition 12 months ago, beat Tiran Sanghera in both finals.

He said: "I always like the Derbyshire County Closed Championships because you get to meet up with everybody towards the end of the year – it's quite a nice, social thing.

"I've been on holiday for the past two weeks so it was nice to get back into tennis again and it's a great feeling once you're back in the rhythm.

"The matches were really good. My first one was challenging because I was still getting into it again.

"The semi-finals in the under-16 draw was also tough against Mark Eastall, because he's a good player and makes you get a lot of balls back.

"I liked that because it makes you a better player when you are playing someone like that."

In the girl's section, Hannah Davey and Millie Devey-Smith took a title each after meeting in both the under-12 and under-14 finals.

Devey-Smith took the latter with a 6-2, 6-3 victory, while Davey claimed the under-12 crown after a 6-0, 6-1 triumph.

There was a new name on the women's singles trophy after Gemma Praditngam narrowly beat Danielle Pym 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in the final.

Praditngam also reached the last round of both the women's doubles and mixed doubles but did not add to her title after losing both in third-set match tie-breaks.

The Bramah trophy for top junior performer went to Christian Mills, who won both the boys' under-12 singles, the under-14 mixed doubles and lost in the boys' under-12 doubles final.
