Two of Ashbourne Tennis Club’s young teams have recently been in action in the Derbyshire Winter League.
A mini red team for players aged eight and under played in Division Two against Chesterfield, David Lloyd Derby and Derby Tennis Centre at the David Lloyd club.
For the Ashbourne quartet of Tom Breen, Sam Butler, Megan Elliott and Evie Selby, it was their first external tournament, and given that David Lloyd and Chesterfield are both performance clubs with over 800 British Tennis members, Ashbourne acquitted themselves well.
By the third match, the players had adapted to the surface and the sponge balls, resulting in some close finishes.
The Under-9 team, playing in the first division for orange teams, had cracking matches against the same clubs, beating Chesterfield but just losing out to David Lloyd and DTC.
James Donlan and Josh Lee both won all but one of their matches, proving to be a powerful doubles pairing, whilst Leo Cooper and Daniel Tavernor won their crucial doubles against Chesterfield.
