Ashbourne Tennis Club are considering making their Davis Cup tribute a regular thing after a successful inaugural event.
A total of 11 under-8 players contested the contest at Ashbourne Leisure Centre, with various fathers and assistants pressed into action to complete Spain’s team.
In order to level the playing field, the slightly more mature players were requested to play with the racquet in the opposite hand to normal, which proved most challenging — not to mention entertaining for the spectators.
The Great Britain team of Kitty Scholes-Pryce, Megan Elliott, Matthew Tavernor, Jonny Daniel, Sean Phillips and Frazer Cooper managed to beat Spain, represented by Flora Kanan, Nicholas Thorpe, Abby Copestake, Conor Phillips, Ben Pitts and various guest players.
Afterwards, the club thanked fathers Cooper, Elliott, Tavernor and Phillips, as well as Tom Bibby and Stephen Elliott, who all played one match, as well as umpiring.
Unfortunately, their overall record left a little to be desired!
