Derbyshire dominate at AEGON Junior International

Promising junior Jay Clarke has won his first Tennis Europe title at Wrexham.

The 13-year-old was among 32 competitors in the boys' under-14 singles main draw at the AEGON Junior International, at the North Wales Regional Tennis Centre.

He played British qualifier Joe Tyler in his opening match and won 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, before beating Spaniard Guanarteme Nuez Delgado 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the second round.

This was followed by a 6-4, 6-3 victory over British wildcard Luke Hammond and, in the semi-finals, a 6-3, 6-3 win over Louis Tessa, of France.

Clarke, of Derby – who was seeded sixth in the tournament – was joined in the final by number one seed Cypriot Andreas Aravis, who he beat 6-4, 6-4.

Meanwhile, Spondon teenager Sam Ferguson won the boys' under-14 doubles title.

The 13-year-old and his partner, Robert Leck, seeded second, did not drop a set on the way to the final.

Here, they beat British duo and third seeds Charles Broom and Piers Foley 5-7, 6-4, 10-6.

The boys played an all British tournament by beating Adam Jones and Ben Kirk in the first round 6-0, 6-0, taking the second round against Thomas Pudney and Joe Tyler 6-0, 6-4. The then went on to beat William Bissett, and Freddie McGeehan in the quarter finals 6-3, 7-6 (8). 

Sam Ferguson also made it to the quarter finals of the boys 14&U singles event beating Brits Ben Kirk (6-2, 6-0) and Freddie McGeehan (6-0, 6-0) in straight sets before losing to Marcus Walters 6-3, 7-6 (3).

Derbyshire player Tiran Sanghera won his opening singles match against Britain's Daniel Bennett 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, before losing 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to Tessa in the second round.

Tiran and partner his Marcus Walters only managed to make it past the first round of the doubles event before losing 6-4 5-7 10-7 to Brit Pierre Luiggi and Francois Mehler of France.
