Double success in Italy takes young Clarke to the top of the European under-14 ranks

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Back to back wins for Normanton junior Jay Clarke have seen him become the best under-14 player in Europe.

The 13-year-old followed up his win in Romania by taking both the singles and doubles titles at the Stanley Cup, in Italy.

And winning his second category-one title in successive weeks means he has claimed the number one spot in Tennis Europe's under-14 rankings.

It is the first time Clarke, who has now extended his winning streak on the continent to 12 matches, has topped the rankings list.

He is also ranked 32 across all junior age groups which compete in Tennis Europe tournaments and leads the under-14 race to the 2012 Tennis Europe Masters.

His father, Earol, said: "It's fantastic news that Jay was able to back up his results from Bucharest by doing the double in Rome.

"What's also really thrilling for him is that he has achieved two personal goals, taking the number one spot and winning a category-one event.

"But getting to number one in Europe is incredible.

"I don't know how many British players, let alone Derby players, have done it but I'm really proud of him."

Clarke has been working towards reaching the number one spot since last year, after moving up into the under-14 age group.

He earned 120 points for winning the singles in both Italy and Romania, to add to the 100 he took after being part of the British team which won the Tennis Europe Winter Cup.

He now has a total points tally of 635.

Clarke entered his latest competition, in Rome, seeded third and opened his account with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Italian wildcard Michele Maria Fenoaltea.

It took a tie-break to separate the Derby youngster and Frenchman Wolfgang Olivier in the first set of their second-round match, before Clarke won 7-6 (1), 6-3.

He recorded a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Dmitry Shatalin, the 16th seed from Russia, while his 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win against Spainard Eduard Guell Bartrina, seeded ninth, earned him a place in the final.

Clarke again came out on top in the first-set tie-break and his straight-sets 7-6 (4), 6-4 triumph over home hope and 10th seed Gian Marco Moroni saw him win the boys' under-14 singles title.

In the doubles, Clarke paired up with Kenneth Raisma, of Estonia, who currently stands second in the Tennis Europe under-14 rankings.

As top seeds, they received a bye in the first round and their first win came against Italian duo Mattia Bedolo and Giovanni Fonio.

The 6-2, 6-4 victory moved them into the semi-finals, where they beat Brit Daniel Bennett and Croatian Nikola Mihaljevic, seeded eighth, 6-3, 6-1.

It took three sets to beat unseeded French pair Dan Added and Mathieu Rajaonah but they eventually triumphed 3-6, 6-1, 10-5.

This was followed by a 6-4, 5-7, 10-0 victory over Hungarians Akos Kotorman and Mate Valkusz in the final.

Clarke senior said: "He played really well throughout the tournament, both in the singles and doubles, and really believed in himself.

"Jay's off to Slovenia now for two events and then is hoping to prepare for the Summer Cup, which he must be picked for, and the Europeans in early July.

"The most important thing now for us is to try and find sponsorship for Jay, because we don't want him to be held back at any point in his efforts."
