Fulwood sees off county rival in Cyprus

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Derbyshire veteran Nick Fulwood has taken a title in Cyprus – after beating fellow county player Edward Oakenfull in the final.

Fourteen players appeared in the over-45 draw at the International Tennis Federation's Cyprus Seniors Cup, with Fulwood and Oakenfull seeded first and second respectively.

They were the only players in the draw to receive a bye in the first round, before Fulwood beat Igor Kiyatkin, of Russia, 6-1, 6-0.

He reached the final with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Slovakian third seed Juraj Sninsky.

Oakenfull, meanwhile, beat Russian Vadim Kirdyashkn 6-1, 6-0 in the quarter-finals and fourth seed Loic Amzalac, of France, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in the semi-finals.

It was only the second time the pair had met during an ITF competition – the last time Fulwood beating Oakenfull 6-0, 6-0.

And history repeated itself again as Fulwood took the title without dropping a single game.

Oakenfull said: "I was pleased to be through to the final but couldn't believe I had gone all that way to face somebody from my own county.

"But Nick was just too good for me. He is still one of the best players in the world for his age."
