Getting ready

The girls kicked off proceedings with some superb competitive tennis being played by all nine players. With great matches and high levels of tennis on display, Niamh Snell, Lucy Edwards and Tilly Scull were all winners of their qualifying groups and progressed to the top tier of round two. The three matches between the top three girls showed high levels of tennis, concentration and determination throughout.

Lucy Edwards remained undefeated throughout the tournament and powered her way through the competition. Her big serve rewarded her with a win over No. 1 seed Niamh Snell 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 before dismissing Tilly Scull with a similar scoreline 5-7, 7-2, 7-5. The match for second place was a well fought affair with Niamh beating Tilly 7-5, 7-1.

Roo Woodleigh-Smith narrowly missed out on a place in the top tier of round two but still showed she is a classy player by winning three of her four matches throughout the day.

In the boys event, Cornwall boys dominated proceedings by winning all three of their qualifying boxes and taking all three slots in tier one of round two. The tournament opened with a closely fought match between Taylor Ingham-Hill and James Morrish. After three long tie breaks, Taylor eventually won 7-5, 11-13, 7-2 but was stopped in his tracks by the eventual box winner Caner Bindiren. Oscar Pringle had an easy route to the final stages without dropping a set. The third qualifying spot went to Freddie Stone who beat Sam Hopper and Morgan Hill on his way to the next round.

The all-Cornish affair did not disappoint! Oscar came back from a first set loss to beat Caner Bindiren in the first match before beating Freddie Stone 7-4, 7-5 and winning the event. The battle for second place was another tight match with Freddie Stone proving he was a bit too strong for friend Caner Bindiren on this occasion 8-6, 7-4.

Taylor Ingham-Hill eventually finished in fourth position following convincing wins over his next two opponents – Sanad Twijiri 7-3, 7-4 and Morgan Hill 7-1, 7-3.

Tom Hobson wins the prize for the most time spent on court with four mammoth matches – 9-11, 11-13 loss to Sanad Twijiri, 2-7, 4-7 loss to Oscar Pringle, 4-7, 10-8, 7-5 win against James Morrish and 8-6, 10-8 win against Sam Hopper.

Congratulations to Lucy Edwards and Oscar Pringle who have automatically qualified for the Winter Regional Tournament at Exeter on Sunday 06 March and fingers crossed for Niamh Snell and Freddie Stone who are on the reserve list for the same event.
