Both our boys and girls teams were unlucky at the recent 18 & Under County Cup. Despite some great battles both teams found themselves relegated.
The boys, playing at Tipton, were up against Wiltshire, North of Scotland and Hereford & Worcester. A decent win on the first day against H&W gave the boys confidence but day 2's opponent, Wiltshire, was a tough opponent. 6 of the matches went to a third set but Devon just couldn't close them out.
This meant that that every match counted on the final day. North of Scotland were the strongest team and though our boys did have chances in quite a few of the matches it didn’t go their way. Ultimately It all came down to how Wiltshire fared against H&W and though they did their best to help out, their loss put Devon into the relegation spot.
Team Coach, Steve Wood said, "The weekend was a really good experience for all the players, With Patrick being the only non-returning player due to age next year this is a young team and we should be looking to build a team for the future years."
Team: Patrick Daykin, Pierce Widdecombe, Ben Greatrex, Joel While, Hugh Ryder, Tom Fenton, Archie Dudman, Max Kilham
The girls went to Redbridge, Essex to play Dorset, Buckinghamshire and North of Scotland. In the end it was a succession of tie break defeats in their doubles matches on days 1 and 3 which sealed their fate. Despite battling hard the girls were unable to get past the post. Kate Absalom, playing in her first County Cup, made a fine debut and we wish good luck to those girls moving into senior tennis at the end of the season.
Team: Lucy Gill, Abbi Skelley, Kate Absalom, Emily Staddon, Amber Lowe, Emma Cobby, Beth Cooper, Beth Matthews.
